Definition
A preference assessment systematically samples a learner's choices to rank likely reinforcers. Common formats include free-operant observation, paired-stimulus (forced choice), and multiple-stimulus-without-replacement (MSWO).
Preference is not the same as reinforcer effectiveness — a preferred item still has to increase behavior to be a reinforcer — but preference assessments are the standard starting point and are repeated often because preferences shift.
