Operant conditioning is the core learning process behind ABA. Behavior that produces favorable consequences becomes more likely; behavior that produces unfavorable consequences, or loses access to favorable ones, becomes less likely. It is distinct from respondent conditioning, which deals with reflexive responses.
Every ABA procedure — reinforcement, extinction, prompting, shaping — is an application of operant principles. The three-term contingency is its basic unit of analysis.
