Definition
Functional Communication Training (FCT) replaces a problem behavior with an appropriate communication response that produces the same reinforcer. If a behavior is maintained by escape, the learner is taught to request a break; if maintained by attention, to request attention.
FCT is one of the most evidence-based behavior reduction procedures. It pairs reinforcement of the new response with extinction of the problem behavior, and works only when the communication response is easier than the behavior it replaces.
