Noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) provides access to the maintaining reinforcer on a time-based schedule, independent of behavior. If a behavior is attention-maintained, the learner receives regular attention regardless of behavior — acting as an abolishing operation that reduces motivation to engage in the problem behavior.
NCR is often used as an antecedent strategy alongside differential reinforcement and is valued for being easy to implement with fidelity.
