When reinforcement for a behavior is first withheld, the behavior often gets temporarily worse — more frequent, more intense, more variable — before it decreases. This is the extinction burst.
Anticipating the burst is essential to planning extinction safely: if caregivers reinforce the behavior during the burst, they teach a more intense form of it. Burst severity is one reason extinction is paired with differential reinforcement.
