Definition
A discriminative stimulus (SD) is a stimulus correlated with the availability of reinforcement for a particular response. Over time, the response occurs more in the presence of the SD and less in its absence.
In discrete trial training, the instruction is the SD. Effective teaching transfers stimulus control so the natural SD — not a prompt — comes to occasion the response.
